What are Childhood Allergies?

According to recent studies, around 10-40% of children suffer from some kind of allergy, with more prevalence in developed countries.

We can witness an increase in allergies to allergens but the exact cause behind it is unpredictable. The reasons may be genetic ors, environmental exposures, and lifestyle and dietary changes.

Allergies can be mild to severe, ranging from food allergies, skin allergies, nasal allergies, and insect sting allergies. It can severely affect the child’s quality of life and can also diminish personal development.

What Does Ayurveda Say About Childhood Allergies?

According to Ayurveda, Allergies in Children are caused by imbalances in the body’s three doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Allergic reactions are believed to occur when toxins accumulate in the body, causing inflammation and immune response.

To treat allergies in children, Ayurveda focuses on restoring balance to the body and supporting the immune system. This can be done through dietary changes, herbal remedies, avoiding wrong and intolerant foods, and other holistic practices.

For example, avoiding trigger foods, eating anti-inflammatory foods such as turmeric and ginger, and incorporating warm, easily digestible foods into the diet can help reduce symptoms. Certain Ayurvedic herbs, such as nettles, ginger, liquorice, turmeric, and bromelain (an enzyme found in pineapples), may also help reduce the inflammation of liquorice or a healthy immune system.

Various Kinds of Allergies in Children

Before we can see how to Deal with Allergies in Children, let’s get to know various kinds of allergies. In Ayurveda, allergies in children are classified based on the individual’s unique body type or “dosha”. The three doshas are vata, pitta, and kapha.

  1. Vata Allergies: Children with vata body types may experience allergies such as asthma, eczema, or hay fever. These allergies are often characterised by dryness, itching, and inflammation.
  2. Pitta Allergies: Children with pitta body types may experience allergies such as hives, skin rashes, or food sensitivities. These allergies are often characterised by heat, redness, and irritability.
  3. Kapha Allergies: Children with kapha body types may experience allergies such as sinusitis, mucus build-up, or congestion. These allergies are often characterized by excess mucus, sluggishness, and feeling heavy.

To sum it up, allergies can be skin allergies, nasal allergies, food allergies, and again there are many types of food allergies. IAFA® has expertise in treating any kind of allergies and till now has treated more than 50000+ patients worldwide.

Wholesome and Unwholesome Foods – As Per Ayurveda

Acharaya Charaka and Vagbhata have mentioned some foods such as Swabhavik (natural) and unwholesome (Apathya). For example:-

  • Yavaka (barley) is the most unwholesome among all the cereals.
  • Similarly, among all pulses, the Masha (black gram).
  • Among various types of drinking water,  the river water in the rainy season is considered unwholesome.
  • Incompatibility by water is also mentioned in Ayurvedic classical texts like if you take any of the oily substances, neither should be mixed in equal proportions nor should be taken along with water. For example when you take honey and clarified butter. To deal with Allergies in Children, it is vital to avoid the wrong foods.
  • The fish should not be taken together with milk because both of them have a sweet taste, but due to the contradiction in their potency (fish is hot and milk is cold) they vita date the blood and obstruct the channel of circulation and cause constipation and diseases relating to blood (allergies) and may even cause severe conditions like shock or anaphylaxis.
  • This comes under the concept of wrong food combinations.
  • When you take both wholesome (pathya) and Unwholesome (apathya), it can become allergic. It is together termed as Samashana which means harmful and can act as an allergen.
  • Eating a meal right after eating one meal is adyashanti and this causes improper digestion of the food and it can turn into an allergen. The timings of intake of food are mentioned in ayurvedic texts and to eat before or after the appropriate time is called visaremashana.
  • Dharanis means energy channels that evoke energy or parang throughout the body. Ayurveda, it is believed that when dharanis become blocked or congested, this can lead to physical, mental, and emotional imbalances. It can also cause hyper senti-type reactions in the body. So unblocking these channels is necessary, it is done especially through yoga and meditation. Yoga and meditation help in the Treatment of Allergies in Children.
  • Even the wholesome food which is taken with proper help does not get digested and can produce ama (toxins may happen due to anxiety, grief,  fear,  anger, and stress and these toxins can also act as allergens.
