Successful Ayurvedic Treatment of Chronic Allergic Bronchitis associated with Nasal and Eye Allergies : A Case Study

The hypersensitivity reactions are produced by our body when exposed to certain types of allergens. Hypersensitivity reactions result in an allergy to the skin or eyes or nose. These reactions lead to chronic diseases in some if not treated well.

An allergy occurs when our body gets exposed to various types of allergens including, pollen, dust, certain types of fragrances, smoke, food and certain drugs.

As per Ayurveda, Allergic reactions occur in our body due to domination or imbalance of the three doshas of our body. So, the Ayurvedic treatment involves the balancing of the three doshas.

Abstract

There are 13 internal and 7 external channels in our body that lead to the manifestation of allergies. Ancient Ayurveda explains Hypersensitivity as Srotasam Atipravruti,  which is body channel hyperactivity. When these channels are exposed to allergens/Aam, symptoms can be seen in the patient. The dominance of any one of the three doshas can be a cause of allergic reactions, mainly Kapha Vata’s predominance is evident. Symptoms include but are not limited to sneezing, headache, runny nose, itchy eyes, itchy nose and ears, mild inflammation, dryness, coughing, inflammation of the bronchi, fatigue, fever and chills. The patient had undergone allopathic treatment even though it provided symptomatic relief but reoccurring the allergic condition is common. But IAFA® by Dr Sahil Gupta is a well-known allergy institute with the most effective Ayurvedic treatment of Allergy, and Dr Gupta is an Ayurvedic allergy specialist whose treatment is well known not only in India but you can also hear from the patients of Canada, Australia and the US. So, the patient had decided to undergo Alternative treatment of Chronic Allergic Bronchitis under the guidance of Dr Sahil Gupta at IAFA®.

Chronic Allergic Bronchitis, Allergic Rhinitis and Allergic Conjunctivitis.

Introduction

Pollen, dust, food, and certain types of drugs are the allergens that are mainly responsible for the immune system of our body to produce hypersensitivity reactions which result in the various types of allergies. As per Ayurveda, domination of any one type of dosha is Pitta, Vata or Kapha. Mainly we can see Vata-Kapha predominant in the occurrence of allergic reactions in our body.

Symptoms

  1. Allergic Rhinitis: In Ayurveda, allergic rhinitis also known as Vata-Kaphaja pratishyaya. The following are the symptoms of the patient with Allergic rhinitis. IAFA® produces the most significant ayurvedic treatment of nasal allergy.
  • Runny nose
  • Itchy eyes
  • Watery eyes
  • Nasal congestion
  • Nasal discharge

  1. Allergic Conjunctivitis: Predominance of Vata dosha, is the cause of Allergic conjunctivitis, in Ayurveda which is called Netra Abhishyanda and below are the common symptoms. Dr Gupta gives the most effective  Ayurvedic treatment of allergic conjunctivitis.
  • Itching
  • Watering
  • Mild inflammation
  • Red eyes
  • Dryness of eyes.
  1. Allergic Bronchitis: In Ayurveda, Bronchitis is included in the Swasa Roga. Here the dominant dosha is Vata along with Kapha vitiation and pranavaha srotas. Bronchitis is the inflammation of the bronchi which is the lining of the lungs. Bronchitis is of two types. One is Acute and the other is Chronic. Acute bronchitis lasts for a few weeks and symptoms include viral or cold infections. Chronic bronchitis lasts for months to years where the patient suffers from a prolonged mucus-producing cough.
  • Inflammation of the bronchi
  • Severe cough
  • Sore throat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty to breath
  • Wheezing
  • Chest pain
  • Chest discomfort
  • Runny nose.

Causes

  1. Allergic Rhinitis (Vata-Kapha pratishyaya): The main cause of Allergic Rhinitis as per Ayurveda is the domination of Vata dosha and the combination of Vata-Kapha dosha. Another reason may be the body’s hypersensitivity, where our immune system reacts to allergens and produces antibodies to fight against allergens and resulting in the inflammation of the body.

The common allergens include:

  • Dust mites
  • Pollen and spores
  • Animals like cat
  • Work-related allergens like wood dust
  • Urine and saliva.
  1. Allergic Conjunctivitis (Netra Abhishyanda): It can be due to exposure to various types of allergens like dust, pollen, and mold. Allergic conjunctivitis is of two types, seasonal and perennial conjunctivitis. Seasonal conjunctivitis may last for the summer or spring months and perennial conjunctivitis lasts throughout the year.
  2. Allergic Bronchitis (Swasa Roga): The risk factors for allergic bronchitis include old age, female, previous allergies and working in a job where continuous exposure to coal mining, and chemical fumes. The other causes include:
  • Air pollution
  • Dust
  • Smoke
  • Cigarette smoke
  • Chemical fumes

Diet Plan Recommended by Dr. Gupta: Based on the patient’s condition and the domination of Vata and Kapha dosha, leading to accumulation of toxins (Ama Visha) due to poor digestion (agni), Dr Sahil Gupta recommends soft and easily digestible foods that have less or histamine stimulants.

Do’s (Pathya):

  • Soft and easily digestible food.
  • More intake of lukewarm water.
  • Fresh vegetables that are rich in fibre.
  • Fresh fruits like apples and pomegranates.
  • Curd in mid-noon along with black pepper.
  • Green leaves and vegetables.

Don’ts (Apathya):

  • High lactose diet like butter, and cheese.
  • Spicy and fried foods.
  • Packaged foods.
  • Yeast and fermented foods.
  • Fruits like banana and avocado
  • Vegetables like eggplants, mushrooms and Ladyfinger.
  • Nuts include peanuts, cashews and pistachios.

Herbal Remedies: Dr Sahil Gupta always suggests patients suffering from allergies include fennel water, cumin water and curry leaves in their diet which enhances Agni (digestive fire) thereby enhancing the digestion of the patient and resulting in the less release of Ama Visha.

  1. Cumin water: Add 1-2gm of cumin seeds in 60ml of water and boil it on a low flame so that the medicinal value of the herbs persists, turn off the flame after a few minutes and strain that out, now it’s ready to consume.
  2. Fennel water: Add 1-2gm of fennel seeds to the 60ml of water and repeat the above-mentioned procedure for this too. After boiling for a few minutes the fennel water will be ready to consume.
