Angular Stomatitis, also known as Angular Cheilitis, is an inflammatory condition that causes swollen, red, and scaly patches on the corners of the mouth and outside the lips.  The condition may cause patches on either or both sides of the mouth and lips. One of the most common and definitive reasons for Angular Stomatitis is the accumulation of saliva around the mouth. When this saliva dries out, it leaves the lips, and the angles of the lips dry, chappy, and scaly. This further leads to the development of cracks which urges one to lick the lips to soothe the dryness and cracks.

The cycle continues and the warmth and moisture around the lips provide the perfect conditions for the fungus to thrive and grow, which ultimately causes the infection. This fungal infection is usually caused by the yeast called Candida, which is also responsible for causing diaper rash in babies.

There are certainly other factors that contribute to the multiplying of this fungus, a few of them are:

  • Frequent licking of lips
  • Smoking
  • If a person wears dentures that don’t fit well
  • If one wears braces
  • Crooked teeth
  • Excessive saliva
  • Thumb sucking
  • Sagging lips because of weight loss or age factor
