September 13, is celebrated as National Peanut Day. Peanuts are a great snack for anyone unless you are allergic to them. Just grab and have them while watching TV, or at the circus or the parks. They can be your bestie everywhere. They can be eaten raw, boiled, roasted with salt, masala roasted and of course peanut butter. Bread with peanut butter and banana sandwich is my favourite and I bet it is your favourite too, right? Let’s make this day more nuttiest by including peanuts in everything.

History of Peanuts

  • Growing peanuts originated in South America around 1500 BC.
  • It spread over North America in the 1700s.
  • But, the origin of National Peanut Day is not well known.
  • Peanut Butter originated for the first time at the St. Louis World’s Fair.
  • Today Peanut farms are worth more than USD 1 billion in the US. 

Some Fun Facts about Peanuts

  • As the name sounds “Peanuts”, they are not nuts. Because nuts grow on trees not underground.
  • They are close to beans and legumes belonging to the Leguminosae. 
  • A 12-ounce of peanut butter consists of around 540 peanuts.
  • Peanut Butter can be seen in 94% of households in America.
  • Dr Carver published research, “How to grow the peanut and 105 ways of preparing it for Human Consumption” in 1916.

  • Peanuts are full of protein and fibre.
  • Peanuts are packed with nutrients such as B6, Niacin, Thiamin and Vitamin E.
  • Peanuts also have vital minerals viz., Magnesium, Potassium, Manganese, Zinc, Ferrum and Selenium. 
  • Peanuts have Zero cholesterol.
