What is Oral Psoriasis?

Oral psoriasis is a less common type in which the changes develop inside the mouth. The symptoms are sores in the mouth, patches or pustules on the tongue, and peeling of gums. This condition normally occurs along with psoriasis at other places of the body.

According to Ayurvedic medical science, Oral Psoriasis can be correlated with Sidhama or Pittaja Mukhpak. As per the Ayurvedic concepts, the tongue is the mirror of the gastrointestinal tract, and any issues with the stomach are quickly reflected inside the mouth. Mukhpaka or Stomatitis refers to the swelling of the mucus membrane present inside the mouth, tongue, and inner cheeks. The causes of mukhpaka are consumption of hot, oily, and spicy food, smoking, tobacco intake, side effects of certain medications, infection, and deficiency of essential vitamins and minerals. Ayurveda has emphasized that mukhpaka is of 4 types, namely vataja, pittaja, kaphaj, and sannipataja. There is a difference in the symptoms of all these types based on the dominant dosha. Some common symptoms are toda (pricking pain), daha (burning sensation), aasya vairasya (lack of taste in mouth), constipation, pain during swallowing of food, and chittodweg or anxiety.

Causes of Oral Psoriasis

Psoriasis is an autoimmune skin disorder in which the body’s defensive mechanism attacks the normal skin cells and forms new skin cells quickly. It is also thought that genetic and environmental factors are also responsible for psoriasis. The disease manifests during the adult stage; however, there is no age predisposition to the condition.

There are some risk factors for the condition, like a positive family history, smoking, alcohol consumption, exposure to pollutants, some medicines, and damage to the oral cavity.

Symptoms of Oral Psoriasis

Some common symptoms of oral psoriasis are:-

  • Lesions or patches with elevated white or yellow borders
  • Itching
  • Raised and scaly patches towards the inner side of the cheeks
  • Sores in the mouth
  • Redness and burning of the lining of the mouth
  • Peeling gums
  • Sensitivity towards eating spicy or acidic foods
  • Redness on the tip of the tongue
  • Furrows on the upper surface of the tongue

Diagnosis of Oral Psoriasis

In most cases, oral psoriasis can be easily diagnosed by carefully examining the mouth. As most people with the condition already have psoriasis, doctors can visually examine the lesions and make a diagnosis. Sometimes, doctors also suggest a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis.

The most common detoxification for psoriasis is Virechana or purgation, which is preceded by Snehapan (Ghee administration). Lifestyle should be simple and balanced.
