Nila / Neelam / Nilamani (Blue Sapphire) – The Astrological and Ayurvedic Benefits

Introduction

Neelam Stone (Blue Sapphire) is a gemstone variety of the mineral corundum, an aluminum oxide (n- Al2O3). Trace amounts of other elements such as iron, titanium, copper, magnesium, and chromium can give corundum blue, yellow, orange, purple, or greenish color, etc. The chemical formula of blue stone is Al2O3. If this stone is dominated by chromium and iron, then it would be called Ruby or Manikya while cobalt and iron dominance makes it Nila (Sapphire). As envisaged, the astronomer of Indian origin believes that Manikya corresponds to the sun planet while Nila / Neelam / Blue sapphire to his son Saturn / Shani. The good blue sapphire has a uniform color, smoothness, round, clear, and oval shape with bright light in the center. If the blue sapphire has a flat shape, rough, and has reddish striations then it should be discarded. As per Ayurvedic classical literature, Bhasma is used as an appetizer, improves the color and tone of the skin, and helps to cure many diseases like dyspnea, piles, irregular fever, cough, skin disorders, etc. There are many different varieties of blue sapphire, but Kashmir Blue sapphire is the best blue sapphire in the whole world and is distinguished from the other blue sapphires by its soft velvety appearance and remarkable blue color. Nila Ratna (Sapphire) has lured people of all the centuries. The first reference to Sapphire is in Brihat Samhita of Varaha Mihir in the 5th century, with the later development of the Rasa Shastra, the purification, incineration, pishti preparation and therapeutic utility of all gemstones was in practice.

Astrological View of Nila / Neelam / Nilamani (Blue Sapphire)

According to the astrological texts, the Blue Sapphire is the gem of the Saturn planet or Shani Greha. Shani Greha plays a great role in changing the luck of the native from one extreme to another in no time and it can change good to bad or vice versa i.e. can turn an underprivileged man into a prosperous, rich man, similarly the opposite too can happen due to the bad effect of Shani Greha. The good effect of Shani can rid the sickness of the person. Shani results in the death of the native through accidents and other causes if it’s in the bad houses of the person. Therefore, while wearing ratna for calming (shanti) of Shani greha one has to be extremely careful. The Puja of the Shani greha has to be observed with the strictest vigil to avoid his wrath and any kind of mishappening. Saturn is inactive, impartial, malefic, and lethargic. The Saturn Planet (Shani Greha) is the planet of confinement and darkness. This planet helps to govern the skin, nervous system, skeleton system, and old age. It makes its natives reflective, reserved, patient, and rebellious.

Types of Nila / Neelam / Nilamani (Blue Sapphire)

  • The Kashmir Blue Sapphire (India)
  • The Burma (Myanmar) Blue Sapphire
  • The Ceylon (Sri Lanka) Blue Sapphire
  • The Thailand Blue Sapphire
  • The Australian Blue Sapphire
  • The Royal Blue Sapphire
  • The Cornflower Blue Sapphire

The Kashmir Blue Sapphire (India) – Kashmir Blue sapphire is the best blue sapphire in the whole world and is distinguished from other blue sapphires by its soft velvety appearance and remarkable blue color. Another remarkable and distinguishable trait of Kashmir blue sapphires is that they are often quoted with white Kaolin. The mines of Kashmir have this beautiful stone but in 1938 the mining of this stone was stopped and Kashmir blue stone was discontinued from the market. But these Kashmir stones are considered best even today due to their minimal gray masking and extreme clarity and the ones that are present in the market are of great value and utmost quality. The origin of these Kashmir blue sapphire occurs from a remote part of Himalayan Mountain i.e. Zanskar Range. First time in 1879- 1882 bright blue Kashmir sapphire was discovered from the Padar portion of Kashmir. As of today mining has been stopped but theft of sapphire is always a constant problem. New mines of sapphire were discovered in Kashmir in 1952 but the sapphire found in the new mine is different from the Kashmir sapphire that is found in the old mines. The main difference is that the majority of the Kashmir sapphires that are collected from the new mine lose their blue hue due to the corrosion and they also miss the flat-formed face of the old mine sapphires. These new mine stones closely resemble the infamous Sri Lankan Ottu stone. These new mine stones are hexagonal pyramid shapes.

The Burma (Myanmar) Blue Sapphire – Although it is the Manikya or ruby for which Burma is famous, the Mogok area of Burma is also famous for some of the world’s famous blue sapphires and has been mined for centuries. Along with this the town of Pein- Pyit and the Chaung-Gyi Valley to the northeast of Mogok city in particular are also famous for producing a blue sapphire of various tones and intensity. Quality wise the Myanmar or Burma Blue sapphire comes after the Kashmir Blue sapphire. The main feature that is found in Burma blue sapphire is the electric blue color which is its distinctive feature and found only in Burma blue stones. These Burma blue stones are medium to darker tones of blue and these stones are very famous for their even color distribution. Sapphires that are mined from Burma also come in other colors like yellow, green, pink, and even black. The mines of the Mogok area of Burma also produce Padparadscha sapphire which is a very rare color of sapphire.

What is a Padparadscha Sapphire?

From the rarest of the sapphires that are considered in the world, Padparadscha sapphires are the one. These stones are extremely rare stones that have a unique mix color of orange and pink. The Padparadscha word is derived from the ancient Sanskrit word that is used to describe the color of a tropical lotus flower. This word is also derived from the Sinhalese word which represents aquatic lotus blossom and has an unusual, rare salmon color. The general public is not very aware of this stone, but the gemologist treasured this unique stone. Some of the Padparadscha stones are heat-treated and these stones should not be confused with the beryllium diffusion-treated sapphires. Untreated Padparadscha are very rare, and few have the opportunity to buy them. Heated variety is also very costly. These stones are found in Sri Lanka, Burma, Tanzania, and Madagascar. However, according to the experts, the true Padparadscha comes only from Sri Lanka. Today Madagascar is producing the majority of the stones that are available in the gem market.

The Ceylon (Sri Lanka) Blue Sapphire

Sri Lanka is considered the capital of Sapphire, as it is the largest source of sapphire in the global market. Sri Lanka has the oldest mines of sapphire in the world reaching as far as the 2nd century AD and international trading of Ceylon blue sapphire has been recorded from Sri Lanka since the 4th and 5th centuries. Primarily the blue sapphire is collected from the Alluvial deposits. The Ceylon blue sapphire that is collected from the Elahera region is considered to be the best quality. The third finest blue sapphire is provided by Sri Lanka after Kashmir and Burma. The blue sapphire of Sri Lanka is superior in quality and beauty. In Ceylon blue sapphire the uneven color is spread throughout the stone, and it is light to medium in tone. This sapphire has a low saturation level due to the presence of grey masking. The Ceylon blue sapphire is the best fit to use in jewelry as they have minimum dark extinction. The blue color of the Ceylon blue sapphire is compared with the hue of the cornflower.

The Thailand Blue Sapphire

The blue stones that are collected from Thailand are one of the rarest and most amazing qualities. These gemstones are famous for their amazing cuts, deep blue color and 90% clarity, and their inclusion is so minute that they can’t be seen with the naked eye. The Thailand blue sapphire is mainly collected from the mining that occurs mainly in the Kanchanaburi and Chanthaburi but the major source of blue sapphire from Thailand is Kanchanaburi which was discovered in 1919. The blue sapphire of Thailand is compared with the heat-treated blue sapphires. These sapphires have a dark blue color to greenish-blue color due to which it is widely used in jewelry.

The Australian Blue Sapphire

The sapphire mining was first revealed in Australia as the Gold mining efforts. In 1851, sapphire was reported during gold mining on the Cudgegong and Macquarie for the first time. The Australian blue sapphires are different from the other blue sapphires for possessing an ink-like dark blue color due to which they appear black. These sapphires have strong green dichroism. By heating process, this Australian blue sapphire is used to produce light blue color sapphire. Greenish blue undertones sapphire is only found in Australia. Many of the blue sapphires that are collected from Australia are heat treated to lighten and make transparent and their color is also improved.

The Royal Blue Sapphire

The most expensive type of blue sapphire is the royal blue sapphire. They are the highest-demanded blue sapphires throughout the world. This sapphire is referred to as royal blue because of the specific deep shade of the blue. Royal blue sapphire value depends upon dimension, transparency, pigments, etc.

The Cornflower Blue Sapphire

This is the most popular type of blue sapphire with a cornflower-like hue with medium to high clarity. This stone has a deep blue color and is famous among world gem lovers.

Characteristics of Nila / Neelam / Shani Ratan (Blue sapphire)

If it is dominated by chromium and iron it would be called Manikya while cobalt and iron make it Nila (sapphire). As envisaged, the astronomer of Indian origin believes that Manikya corresponds to the sun planet while Nila to his son, Saturn. It is one of the three gems of the Kuruvind category, Ruby, Sapphire, and Emery. The blue color of sapphire is probably due to titanium oxide. It is a fiery gemstone. After Heera, only the Kuruvind class has a place in hardness. Sapphire is available in many colors such as dark blue, light blue, inky, velvety, black, black-blue mixed, sky blue, etc. Among these, transparent sapphire is the best. Sapphire is such an alert gem that sometimes it shows adverse effects to the people affected by Shanigraha, but mostly it gives favorable rewards to the people affected by Shanigraha and makes them prosperous. Sapphire is the only gem whose wearing results in both favorable and unfavorable. Wearing other gems generally does not have any adverse effect, but some people suffering from Shani graha, as soon as they buy sapphire, face many troubles and obstacles up to death. Its chemical composition is aluminum oxide.

Another man should hold the sapphire in his hand and shine the light of the sapphire on the said milk vessel through moonlight. If that sapphire produces blue light on milk and women with its light, then it should be considered as a good sapphire. Like diamonds, sapphire also comes in four types according to Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Shudra, and has four colors: white, yellow, blood, and black.

Though the gemstones of mineral origin are eternal, the Exception is Mukta (pearl) has a limited lifespan, and also Vidruma- coral. Nila / Neelam / Blue Sapphire Aayu after Dharana (Lifespan of Blue sapphire after assumption)

Ratna gives maximum benefits when they have a powerful life expectancy. A lot is dependent on how much you care about your blue sapphire as they need to be maintained to remain effective. The average effectiveness of blue sapphire after wearing it in a ring is approximately 5 years.

Blue sapphire is a Gem for the planet Shani and its life span after assumption is approximately 5 years after it loses its Prabhava on the beholder.  Although the blue sapphire gemstone is eternal and forever, for astrological purposes and effectiveness, its revitalization is necessary.

Precious gemstones like Ruby and emeralds, all varieties of sapphires like yellow sapphire (topaz), Hessonite, Neelam (blue sapphire), and Diamond have a long lifespan as they belong to the transparent group. Over some time, when they are worn these transparent gems start to get scratches on their surface, and even start losing their high polishing due to which sun rays stop passing through the gems (Ratna) When these precious gems are worn for a long period a greasy layer starts to deposit on their surface which is probably a mixture of lubricants, oils and other materials that a wearer come in contact with it. As the deposition starts to get thicker with time, it even blocks the rays (different wavelengths) that these precious stones receive from the planets to give effect. Although precious gemstones are forever yes, their effectiveness for astrological purposes falls and therefore proper and regular maintenance is important.

Occurrence or Places of Availability of Nila / Neelam / Nilamani (Blue Sapphire)

Sapphires are mined from alluvial deposits or primary underground workings. The mining locations include Myanmar, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Australia, Thailand, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tanzania, Kenya and China. The Logan sapphire, the Star of India, and the Star of Bombay originate from Sri Lankan mines. The sapphire deposits of Kashmir are still well known in the gem industry, even though the peak production from this area mostly took place in a relatively short period at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries. At present, the world record price-per-carat for a sapphire at auction is held by a sapphire from Kashmir, which sold for over $145,000 per carat (over 3.8 million dollars in total) in November 2011.
