What is Spinal Cord Cancer?

Spinal cord cancer is a cancer that develops within the bones of the spine or the spine canal. It is also known as intra-dural tumor as it begins in the covering of the spinal cord i.e., dura or within the spinal cord.

Types of Spinal Cord Cancer

There are two main types of spinal cord cancer:-

1. Extra Medullary Tumor: This cancer develops in the nerve roots that reach out from the spinal cord or in the membrane that surrounds the spinal cord. These types of cancer cause compression of the spinal cord e.g. neurofibroma, meningiomas, etc.

These are the different types of spinal cord cancer:-

  • Chordoma
  • Schwannoma
  • Ependymoma
  • Astrocytoma
