Food Intolerances with Allergic March are becoming common health problems which are difficult to diagnose and still difficult to treat but Ayurveda can treat these allergies effectively as guidelines in Ayurvedic texts are available for their successful management without any adverse effect.

Abstract

Allergy is defined as a disorder in which the body becomes hypersensitive to particular antigen, which provokes characteristic symptoms whenever they are subsequently encountered whether inhaled or ingested.  According to Ayurveda, allergic reactions are reflective of our constitutions, when the predominant doshas are aggravated.

Food Allergy is an allergy manifested by an abrupt onset of symptoms within minutes to hours after ingesting a particular type of food. Various allergic reactions can be correlated in Ayurveda as these are explained in Ayurvedic texts. Some foods are known to cause toxic effects and adverse reactions in some individuals. The abnormal food reaction could be either due to food hypersensitivity, food allergy or food intolerance.

A 41-year-old NRI male patient approached IAFA® with gastrointestinal imbalance and allergic response to multiple foods specifically protein like dals, chana, soy etc. that cause hypersensitivity reaction causing symptoms like bloating, headache, joint pain, brain fog that would take 2-3 days to recover from the past 10-12 years and was on immunotherapy.

This case study aims to present the successful Ayurvedic treatment of food intolerances/allergies, skin allergies, and seasonal allergic rhinitis by IAFA®, as the patient experienced relief within three months of treatment under the supervision of Dr. Gupta.

Ayurvedic Concept

Ayurveda has explained various types of diseases or symptoms that are similar to “allergy”. The Ayurvedic concept maintains that allergens such as pollen, dust etc. trigger symptoms in susceptible people but they are not the primary cause of allergies.

Instead, it is a spectrum involving all the three doshas in pathogenesis along with Rasadhatu as the main Dushya. Various conditions like Asatmya Ahara (unwholesome food), Viruddhahara (incompatible food) and Dushavisha (a type of internal toxin) are common etiological factors which can be correlated with various allergic conditions.
