The Institute of Applied Food Allergy® (IAFA), IAFA Ayurveda, has published a clinical case report highlighting the successful Ayurvedic management of chronic Molluscum contagiosum, a common viral skin condition known for frequent recurrence despite conventional treatments. The study, published in the World Journal of Pharmaceutical and Medical Research, presents an integrative, root-cause-oriented approach based on classical Ayurvedic principles.
Molluscum contagiosum typically appears as painless, dome-shaped papules on the skin and is often managed through lesion-destructive procedures such as cryotherapy or curettage. However, recurrence remains a major challenge. Ayurveda correlates this condition with Ajagallika, a Kshudra Roga caused predominantly by Kapha-Vata imbalance, involving superficial skin (Tvak) and Rasa Dhatu, along with impaired digestion (Agni Mandya) and toxin accumulation (Ama).
The published case involved a 20-year-old female with a 1.5-year history of recurrent molluscum lesions that did not respond to prior cryotherapy and topical applications. The Ayurvedic treatment protocol combined external herbal formulations for local lesion management with internal medicines aimed at improving digestion, clearing metabolic toxins, and enhancing systemic and cutaneous immunity. Personalized dietary and lifestyle guidance was also provided to prevent further Kapha aggravation and autoinoculation.
Within four weeks of treatment, the patient showed significant improvement, including reduction in itching, softening and flattening of lesions, prevention of new lesion formation, and notable improvement in digestive health. Importantly, the treatment was well tolerated, with no reported adverse effects.
This case report highlights the potential of Ayurveda as a holistic and supportive approach in managing chronic and recurrent Molluscum contagiosum by addressing both visible symptoms and underlying systemic imbalances. While further large-scale clinical studies are needed, the findings reinforce the role of individualized Ayurvedic care in skin health and immune regulation.
